Become a friend of Above Down

County Down is blessed with a long and exciting coast line, with fishing, boating and other water sports commonplace.

The tidal inlet of Strangford Lough's sheltered waters provide protection for its varied sealife.  Small islands dotted along its western shore offer wonderful views.

Friendly towns and villages appear amongst the farmland along the network of criss-crossing country roads. Rolling hillocks lead south, moulded by ice, to the imposing Mountains of Mourne, visible from most of the county.

Historic and ancient buildings, including stone circles, Medieval round towers and monastic houses give a sense of the maturity of this landscape, some dating back thousands of years.

Whether you are a resident of County Down or visiting, we hope you find somewhere new and exciting to visit, explore and enjoy.

The People of County Down are proud of their heritage and region and this site captures some of the reasons why and catalogue special places to visit in this beautiful county of Northern Ireland.
